National Geography Week & G.I.S. Rocks

We celebrated Geography Awareness Week (11/13-16), promoting Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Geographic Literacy in schools and among the citizens of and visitors to Lakeland. Interactive GIS Maps/Technology and educational videos were also set up in the lobby and special "#GISrocks" were hidden around Lake Mirror throughout the week!

Veterans Day 2018

The Polk County Veterans Council conducted its annual Veterans Day Ceremony at Lakeland’s Veterans Memorial Park at 10 AM, Saturday, November 10th, 2018 with a parade following the ceremony.

The Veterans Council selected as this year’s theme a tribute to James Henry Mills, Fort Meade native and the only Polk County soldier to ever receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. His citation describes his conspicuous gallantry in the Italian campaign of WWII. A beautiful monument stands in the park honoring Mills. Dedicated in 1986, the monument was unveiled after getting a much-needed facelift! Additionally, an interpretive plaque was unveiled that tells the story of Mills’ life and his tragic murder on Veterans Day, November 11, 1973.

The calendar features beautifully photographed SPCA Florida rescued pets and buff Lakeland firefighters. Each month of the year also features helpful safety tips and information from both organizations.

The high-quality calendars can be purchased for a $10 donation and make the perfect gift for the upcoming holidays.
