Florida City Government Week: October 22-28, 2018.
The Florida League of Cities and its member cities have joined together to teach students and other citizens about municipal government through a variety of different projects and information. Florida City Government Week offers an important opportunity to convey to all the citizens of Florida that they can shape and influence government through their civic involvement and positively impact lives by volunteering.
Talbot House Ministries Day: October 25, 2018
Talbot House Ministries was founded in 1979, and is now celebrating nearly 40 years as an Inter-denominational Christian Ministry. Talbot House Ministries has grown over the years from a simple soup kitchen to become the largest and most comprehensive care center for the poor and homeless. Talbot House has partnered with the City of Lakeland and other community organizations to serve the needs of our citizens and facilitate the renaissance of the commercial centers of our city.
White Cane Safety Day: October 15, 2018
On October 6, 1964, a joint resolution of Congress was signed into law authorizing the President of the United States to proclaim October 15th of each year as "White Cane Safety Day”. The White Cane Law was created to ensure the right to travel independently using a white cane or guide dog wherever a person who is Blind or has visual impairments chooses to go. The City of Lakeland has made a commitment to greater accessibility for all citizens and visitors, and will continue to strive to provide accessible programs and services to the community.
For the fourth year in a row, the Lakeland Fire Department (LFD) and SPCA Florida proudly present its Rescued Pets Calendar! The calendar features beautifully photographed SPCA Florida rescued pets and buff Lakeland firefighters. Each month of the year also features helpful safety tips and information from both organizations.
The high-quality calendars can be purchased for a $10.00 donation and make the perfect gift for the upcoming holidays. Orders are being accepted online now! The calendars will be available in brick and mortar locations by Tuesday, October 23, 2018.
Join us next week for the 38th Annual Swan Roundup on Lake Morton with the City of Lakeland Parks Division at 7:00 AM on Tuesday, October 23rd. Parks & Recreation employees will be carefully gathering the swans to get them ready for their annual veterinary check-up. The swans will be confined in large holding pens on the south side of the lake for their annual wellness examinations with Dr. Patricia Mattson that will start the morning of October 24th at 8:00 AM. The Annual Swan Round-Up allows the City’s Parks and Recreation Department to closely monitor the health and vitality of Lakeland’s swan population.
The City of Lakeland’s Neighborhood Outreach Division hosted a Neighborhood Leadership Bootcamp on Saturday, October 13th at City Hall. This free event was designed to help inform citizens about the programs and services offered by the City of Lakeland.

The Grounds Crew at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium is the winner of the Florida State League's Municipality Award, which is given to the Best City or County-Operated Sports Turf Crew in the League. This is the third time City of Lakeland Parks & Recreation has won this Award.

Congratulations to City of Lakeland Water Utilities and the Se7en Wetlands team who received the Environmental Excellence Award for Environmental Project of the Year from the Tampa Bay Association of Environmental Professionals at USF this week!
