Lakeland City Manager Candidates Narrowed to Six

Gov HR USA Recruitment Portfolio

LAKELAND, FL (September 29, 2020) | The Lakeland City Commission has narrowed the list of City Manager candidates to six after a meeting on September 29th, 2020.  The search firm GovHR lead by Heidi Voorhees, provided a list of 16 candidates recommended for further consideration in the hiring process.

After a virtual meeting discussing each candidate, the City Commission then decided to invite six candidates to participate at the next level of the interview process.  The Commission will interview six semi-finalists with four candidates participating in a one-hour individual video conferencing session on October 7th and two candidates on October 9th.  The City Commission will then narrow the selection to the top three invited to interview in person.

The six semi-finalists in no particular order are as follows:

  1. Natasha Hampton, Assistant City Manager for Rocky Mount, North Carolina
  2. Ty Kovach, Executive Director for Lake County Forest Preserve, Libertyville, Illinois
  3. Ronda Perez, Assistant City Manager for City of Lancaster, California
  4. Shawn Sherrouse, Interim City Manager for the City of Lakeland
  5. Michael Moore, former Chief of Staff for the United States Navy Command
  6. Edward Phillips, Chief Operating Officer/City Manager for MacDill Air Force Base

Heidi Voorhees, President of GovHR, stated, “The City Manager search yielded 126 resumes from 28 states, including 59 applicants from Florida. Through the credential review, interviews and research, the list narrowed to those I believe are most suited for the position.”

Mayor Bill Mutz said, “After reviewing each candidate on the list provided by GovHR, each City Commissioner provided their top six candidates.  We reached a consensus and look forward to the next step in the process when we talk to each of the six candidates during a one-hour question and answer session.”

The City of Lakeland is now searching for a new City Manager after Tony Delgado retired with 23 years of service.  Shawn Sherrouse is currently serving as Interim City Manager during the search process.  Interim City Manager Sherrouse is one of the semi-finalists for the City Manager position.
