Florida’s domestication story begins in the Grotto where artesian wells bring forth water, the lifeblood of the land. Native Americans and Florida pioneers alike depended on water for their survival. As Florida was settled, the necessity and importance of agriculture evolved. Our agrarian roots are displayed by the many fruit, vegetable and tropical edibles within the garden rooms. The bowls and runnels form the garden’s spine, representing man’s ability to control flood water to his benefit. As one approaches Lake Mirror, the garden becomes increasingly aesthetic, representing man’s eagerness to enhance the beauty of Florida’s land and its flora.
