Fairbanks Street Project
This project will re-construct Fairbanks Street between Kathleen Road and the CSX railroad mainline. A new at-grade crossing will be constructed to allow Fairbanks Street to be extended west of the railroad track. The roadway will then run north, paralleling the railroad track and will intersect with Bella Vista Street. The Bella Vista Street railroad crossing will be removed and Bella Vista Street will become a local dead-end road between Kathleen Road and the railroad track. A new traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of Fairbanks Street and Kathleen Road along with a new southbound right turn lane on Kathleen Road. The City will also close the median openings on Kathleen Road at W. Lavon Street and Arlington Road. The Florida Department of Transportation is requiring the closure of these median openings so that the left turn lanes at Fairbanks Street may be lengthened.
The City awarded a $2.1 million construction contract to Kearney Construction Co., LLC (Tampa, FL) in August 2007. Construction commenced on November 5, 2007 and should be complete by December 2008. Construction is 90% complete and the new traffic signal at Kathleen Road is operational. The City is waiting for CSX to complete installation of a crossing signal at the new crossing and removal of the crossing at Bella Vista. Their work is scheduled to be complete by mid-November.
Chastain-Skillman, Inc. (Lakeland, FL) is the engineering consultant for this project. Construction Engineering and Inspection services are being provided by DRMP, Inc. (Lakeland, FL).
This project is being funded by an Office of Tourism, Trade, and Economic Development (OTTED) grant, Gas Tax, and Impact Fees.
