North Lakeland Eastern Connector Study

The City contracted with DRMP, Inc. (Orlando, FL) to evaluate the need for improved east-west travel within the northern portion of the city. The general boundaries of the study area encompass the area bounded on the west by US 98, on the south by Griffin Road, on the east by Lakeland Hills Boulevard/North Socrum Loop Road and on the north by North Socrum Loop Road/Marcum Road.

The objective of the study is to identify and evaluate potential east-west connections between US 98 and Lakeland Hills Boulevard/North Socrum Loop Road. The study will identify and evaluate the purpose of and need for the proposed improvement. This will include an evaluation of existing facilities as well as the identification of potential new east-west corridor connections.

DRMP, Inc. presented the study recommendations to the City Commission on March 17, 2008. Their recommendations were:
• Open the private section of Carpenter’s Way from east of Corporate Avenue to Wedgewood Estates Boulevard.
• Provide a new two lane roadway connection between Crevasse Street, near Union Drive, and Lakeland Park Drive.
• Intersection improvements at the following locations:
* Lakeland Hills Boulevard (SR 33) and Griffin Road
* Lakeland Hills Boulevard (SR 33) and North Socrum Loop Road
* West Daughtery Road and US 98
* East Daughtery Road and Walt Loop Road and Socrum Loop Road

The City intends to move forward with these recommendations in phases. The first action will be to acquire the private section of Carpenter’s Way and then make improvements before it is opened to the public. The City proposes to widen the existing private roadway, construct sidewalks, and make drainage improvements. Consideration will also be given to the realignment of Heatherpointe Drive with the intersection of Carpenter’s Way at Wedgewood Estates Boulevard.
