Wabash Avenue Extension Study
The Wabash Avenue Extension project involves the development of a north-south corridor located on a new alignment in a suburban area of southwest Lakeland and portions of unincorporated Polk County. The Wabash Avenue Extension will begin at Ariana Street, continue southward, and ultimately connect with Harden Boulevard, for a total distance of approximately 3.0 miles. Ongoing and future development and deficient Levels of Service (LOS) on existing roadways in the study area necessitate the development of a new north-south corridor to accommodate future travel demand.
The Wabash Avenue Extension PD&E Study will evaluate alternatives that maximize opportunities to utilize dedicated right of way provided by the Drummond Corporation, a condition of approval of portions of the Oakbridge DRI. The analysis will consider future travel demand while balancing the known constraints and potential social and environmental effects. Other elements of the study will include consideration of pedestrian and bicycle facilities and will include a preliminary structural evaluation to consider vertical and horizontal clearances under the Polk Parkway (State Road 570).
