Kids' Summer Reading Challenge 2021

Welcome to our Tails & Tales Kids' Summer Reading Challenge.

From the sky to the ocean, we're focusing on all things animals this year with Tails & Tales.  Here's what we've got planned:

  • Tails & Tales Trek Guide and Summer Reading Challenge

Keep reading through the summer to collect online badges, stickers, and prizes.

Read at least 3 days each week to earn a digital badge on Beanstack.  Then stop by any Lakeland library to get a sticker and collect a prize.  You can also earn bonus badges in Beanstack by watching four videos on the nature you can find right here in Lakeland.  That's 8 badges and 4 bonus badges.

You can pick up your Trek Guide at any Lakeland Library, or you can print your own here: PDF

This guide provides a place for kids to put the stickers they earn.  It is not a reading log.  All reading needs to be logged on Beanstack.

Each week, in addition to the digital badge and the sticker for your trek guide, there will be a small prize that corresponds to the weekly theme.  Kids can earn one small prize for every three days read and logged on Beanstack.  There are 8 total prizes.

For those who earn all eight digital badges, their name will be entered into our grand prize drawing at the end of summer.

  • Take Home Crafts

Summer Reading participants can pick up a themed take-home craft kit each week at any Lakeland Library.  New kits will be available each Monday.

  • Storytime

Storytime is back for the summer!

Join us on Tuesdays at the Main Library (limited seating, registration required) or Thursdays at the Larry R. Jackson Branch for storytime.

The Main Library storytime will be available both in person and on Facebook Live. **Registration is required** to attend the Main Library storytime in person. Seating is limited. Storytime begins at 10 AM and will also be streamed live on Facebook through the Library's Facebook page. NOTE: Due to limited in-person space, we cannot accommodate summer camps, daycares, or groups.

The Larry R. Jackson Branch storytime will take place outside!  Storytime begins at 10 AM in the shaded grassy area behind the library. Bring a chair, blanket, or towel to sit in the grass during storytime.

  • Videos

Join us as we look at some of the Tails that live in Lakeland, as well as conservations efforts championed by the city.  These videos will be posted on Facebook during their corresponding weeks and are in addition to the videos to watch on Beanstack.
