Arts & Rec!

About the Program

The City of Lakeland, Parks & Recreation Department, is excited to introduce "Arts & Rec!" A program to provide exposure to art in our Recreation facilities through classes and programs, highlighting art and artists in our venues, and rotating art exhibitions featuring Central Florida artists. A 'Call for Art,' will be hosted and organized in partnership with Art Crawl, Inc. - a Lakeland-based nonprofit organization serving as a catalyst to celebrate the emergence of new and innovative artists in Central Florida. Artwork will be chosen for the exhibitions based on originality, skill, the appearance of the artist's voice, visual impact, quality, and each physical exhibition space. Artwork must be framed and/or otherwise ready to be securely hung for consideration. All mediums are welcome. The City of Lakeland will provide name plaques for each exhibition, which will include artist information and options on how to purchase the artwork directly.

Visit our first exhibitions at Kelly Recreation Complex and Lake Crago Outdoor Recreation Complex.

    Pallette Philosophy
    Acrylic

"Pallette Philosophy" was created in August of 2020 through discussion of the inherent racism in "the art world." The nine colors at the bottom of the canvas are the only colors used to create the entire composition, and the light pink color of the chair that the main figure is seated in is called "flesh tone yellow," but whose flesh is this meant to mimic? Does it not seem like a limiting palette? Why is the seated figure's angle so confusing? Do we all view this piece in the same way? This figure's hands are poised in a similar fashion to a subject in a Michelangelo study, suggesting that this piece should be viewed as a philosophical reflection.

    Geometric Shine
    Mosaic
    $240

This piece is part of my Silver Surfboard Series. It was assembled with an upcycled bathroom vanity mirror donated by neighbors. The mirror shapes echo thoughts of high school geometry class. This piece evolved from my love of all things shiny and another piece I did incorporating mirrors. The mirrors bring in light and the pattern they reflect is constantly changing through-out the day and depending on where it is displayed.

    Trapped

This is a piece that portrays many young people these days where anxiety, emotions, and pain trap them to face their problems on their own. Sometimes they are so locked in them that they aren't physically shown through all the joyful colors.

Texture Study #1 (Goat Skull Still Life)
    Colored Pencil

I like to challenge myself and draw mundane household items that people would normally throw away.  This is a handful of items I decided to arrange one day, took a picture with my phone, and drew them.

Texture Study #2 (Melon Still Life)
    Colored Pencil

The owner of the company that I work for made the framed bug in the picture.  I wanted to use it in one of my still-lifes to contrast with the 'trash' items I usually use. I chose extremely texturally detailed items that I didn't think I'd be able to draw as a challenge to push through and prove my self-doubt wrong.

I used Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) technique to capture this. I am always searching for ways to photograph nature in abstract to allow others to see through my photographs what they cannot see with their eyes. This demands far more from my mind than shooting realism.

    The Pelican and the Cypress
Watercolor and India ink on canvas
    $720

The photo reference used for this piece was taken at Lake Morton. This was an experimental piece. The canvas was coated with watercolor ground and the background was stained using tea, and watercolor. For over a year the canvas sat coated and stained. I was unsure what to do with it. It came as a huge surprise when I took the leap and paired this canvas with this photo reference. All the black marks in the piece was with the nib of a calligraphy pen. I never made so many marks in one single piece that large. It really took on a life all it's own.
