Lakeland City Commission Meetings Will Start at 3 PM Beginning in September

Lakeland City Commission 2018

LAKELAND, FL (August 7, 2018) - There will be a permanent change with the starting times of the Lakeland City Commission meetings starting September 4th.  This date will mark the new time shift from 9 AM to 3 PM.  All City Commission meetings take place the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month unless the date falls on a recognized holiday.  This is the case for the Tuesday, September 4th meeting due to the Labor Day holiday.

Mayor Bill Mutz said, “The City Commission voted to move the meeting to 3 PM to help increase citizen participation for those that want to attend the meetings in person.  Starting in September, engaged citizens will be able to address the commission without compromising their day or take a great deal of time off from work because we have moved the audience portion of the meetings to the very end.”  He added, “The 3 PM time slot was chosen as a compromise to better accommodate our citizens and the business sector who frequently attend City Commission meetings.”

City Manager Tony Delgado said, “Staff has reviewed options to help Commission meetings run more smoothly in preparation for the 3 PM start time. We have made some slight modifications to the agenda to improve accessibility for our everyday citizens as well as meet the needs of those that regularly conduct business with the City.”

Changes to the Agenda starting in September will include:

  • A 3 PM call to order to start the meetings.
  • The current audience portion at the beginning of the agenda will be removed so there will only be one audience portion at the end of the agenda to better accommodate citizens.
  • The Equalization Hearings will be moved to item II versus item III on the agenda (new notices will be sent advertising 3 PM start time).
  • The Utility section will move from item X to item VIII with Utility Committee recommendations already in place (Utility Committee maintains 1 PM meeting start time).

Commissioner Justin Troller said, “This is great news as we continue to push for improved transparency in government. It’s a win anytime we can better serve the Citizens of Lakeland and getting the City Commission meetings moved to a later hour has been on my agenda for years. I commend this Commission and staff for making it happen.”
