Lakeland Gang Task Force - Neighborhood Outreach | Westside Park Area
WHO: Over 200 volunteers including staff members from City of Lakeland Departments
WHAT: Coordinated effort to create awareness of anti-gang message through neighborhood outreach
WHERE: Westside Park Area – Volunteers will meet at Evangelical Deliverance Ministries (815 South Central Avenue) near the West Area Adult School
WHY: This area is susceptible to gang related activity
WHEN: Saturday, February 17th at 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Over 200 volunteers will concentrate on the community around Westside Park on Saturday, February 17th from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. The volunteers will assist in yard clean-up and debris removal as part of a focused neighborhood outreach. Neighborhood clean-up volunteers will assemble at the Evangelical Deliverance Ministries property located at 815 South Central Avenue, near the West Area Adult School. Team members from the Dream Center will coordinate volunteers and assist in children activities for those that live in the neighborhood. Food will be served to neighborhood members and the volunteers around noon to complete the outreach event.
Police Chief Larry Giddens, “A few years ago we had a noticeable uptick in gang related activity. I’m proud to say our multi-pronged approach that includes prevention, intervention and suppression elements have helped us reduce the number of gang related crimes over the past few years.” He added, “We are exceptionally blessed to have passionate people who truly care about the community come together as a unified team to share our prevention and intervention message. Our hats go off to Mike Cooper and the Dream Center for their continued assistance in overseeing our neighborhood outreach events.”
Members from the City Commission, City Manager’s Office, Lakeland Police Department, Lakeland Fire Department, Parks & Recreation, Public Works, Community Development and Communications will be part of the volunteer base assisting in the neighborhood outreach.
