The City Commission met on Monday, May 7th.
Munn Park Monument Relocation
Though the City Commission voted in 2017 to move the Munn Park Confederate Monument, a decision as to where it would be moved was not made until the City Commission Meeting on May 7th. After hearing public comment on the topic, the Commission voted unanimously to relocate the statue to Veterans Memorial Park (12 Lake Beulah Drive, Lakeland) using private funds/donations.
On Monday, the City of Lakeland Public Works Department's Lakes & Stormwater Division received the APWA 2018 Project of the Year Award for Small Structures for the Lake Hollingsworth Shoreline Stabilization Project - Seawall Installation. Congratulations to our Lakes & Stormwater team!

Cash Handling Discrepancy Found at Simpson Park
The City of Lakeland discovered proper cash handling procedures were not followed within a division of the Parks & Recreation Department. A financial review of accounts at the Simpson Park Recreation Complex was conducted and indicated a balance sheet discrepancy involving program revenue bank deposits. A team from Internal Audit, Finance and Parks & Recreation discovered a loss of $117,113 over a five-year period had occurred. The investigation is ongoing.
As part of a week-long tour along the Gulf Coast, The NOAA Hurricane Hunters made a stop at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport on Friday, May 11th. Attendees toured two of the Hurricane Hunter aircraft, spoke with the pilots, and walked through vendor exhibits from various local agencies and organizations. Are YOU ready for hurricane season?
