The Lakeland Public Library has been open and operating since 1927. It has been at the current location since 1966. In the years 1983 to 1985, the library underwent extensive expansion and renovation. Again in 2006, the Main Library underwent an expansion and renovation of the Youth Services Rooms (an additional 2,500 sq.ft was added). In 1995, the Larry R. Jackson Branch opened for business at 1700 N. Florida Avenue. In July 2007 eLibrary South Lakeland opened as a storefront express public library location, operated by Lakeland, but funded through Polk County's Community Investment Dollars (MSTU). The Library has been a member in the Polk County Library Cooperative since its inception in October of 1997.

The mission of the Lakeland Public Library is to make high quality public library services available in response to the pursuit of education, recreation and information.
