Humanities Program set for April 2010 Link to Florida Humanities Council Stories of Florida – Con Sabor with Carrie Sue Ayvar
Thursday, April 8 at 7pm in the Main Library Meeting Room
Stories of Florida - Con Sabor! Flowing seamlessly between Spanish and English, storyteller Carrie Sue Ayvar takes her audiences on a multicultural journey of the imagination with her large repertoire of tales. Con un poquito de sabor Latino (with a bit of Latino flavor), Ayvar blends traditional, international, and personal stories, connecting Florida’s people, languages, and cultures.
Carrie Sue Ayvar is a third-generation award-winning storyteller who came of age in Mexico. A Chautauqua scholar and Artist-in-Education, Ayvar received training at the Kennedy Center. She is very involved in Florida storytelling guilds and is the Florida State liaison to the National Storytelling Network. Ayvar also participates in FHC's PRIME TIME Family Reading program as a bilingual storyteller. This program is FREE to the Public.

Books Sandwiched In Books Sandwiched In (BSI) is a monthly book discussion group, which meets in the Main Library Meeting Room on the first Tuesday of every month and the Larry R. Jackson Branch Library (1700 North Florida Avenue) Meeting Room on the first Wednesday at 12:15 p.m.
Each month’s selected book can be purchased for $2.00 at the Main or Branch Library during the preceding month while supplies last. Coffee and books are underwritten by the Friends of the Library. Please feel free to bring a bag lunch.

i˛ film club The i˛ film Club is a free film viewing and discussion group at the Larry R. Jackson Branch Library. The club's focus is on watching and discussing international independent films. The i˛ film Club meets the fourth Saturday of each month at 10:30 am at the Jackson Branch Library (1700 North Florida Avenue). Refreshments are provided and each showing is followed by a guided discussion.

March 27 Troubled Water (Norway)
Synopsis Jan, recently released from prison after serving time for the murder of a child, has always maintained his innocence and is ready to put the past behind him. A gifted organist, he takes a job at an Oslo church under his middle name, Thomas. His talent and gentle manner quickly earn him the respect of his superiors, as well as the love of the pastor, Anna. Thomas even overcomes his initial panic to return the affection of Anna's young son, Jens. But his past catches up with him when Agnes, a local teacher, comes to the church on a school visit and recognizes the organist as Jan, the young man who was convicted for the murder of her son.

Synopsis It's 1988, and Melo, an Uruguayan town on the Brazilian border, awaits the visit of Pope John Paul II. 50,000 people are expected to attend, and the most humble locals believe that selling food and drink to the multitude will just about make them rich. Petty smuggler Beto thinks he has the best idea of all--he decides he will build a WC in front of his house and charge for its use. His efforts bring about unexpected consequences, and the final results will surprise everyone.

Synopsis Terek, a Palestinian forced on a suicide mission in Tel Aviv to redeem his father's honor, is given a second chance when the fuse on his explosive vest fails to detonate. Forced to spend the weekend in Tel Aviv awaiting its repair, Terek must live amongst the people he was planning to kill. To his surprise he connects with several Israelis on the outskirts of society, including the beautiful Keren, who has cut off contact with her Orthodox family and upbringing. With nothing to lose, Terek and Keren open up to one another, and an unlikely love blooms between two isolated and damaged individuals, raised to be enemies. While spending this time with Keren, Terek discovers the spark of life returning to fill his soul. But when the weekend ends, Terek must make the decision of his life.
