Library Circulation Policy
Free library cards can be issued to all Polk County residents. To obtain a library card, present a valid picture ID, along with proof of current address to any library service desk, OR register online and bring in proof of address within 30 days to receive full library privileges. [Proof of address documents include: driver's license, utility bill, voter's registration card, rental agreement.] There is no minimum age requirement to apply for a library card. Children of any age can obtain a library card with parent/guardian permission. Teens with a driver’s license or ID can apply for their own library card.
To access your account online, go to our catalog and log in using your library card number and PIN. (Don't have your PIN? Don't worry, you can call or visit your library to obtain it!) From your account, you may view all materials checked out and their due dates, renew items, view your fines and holds, place requests, and view system messages. Please direct any questions regarding your library account to the Circulation Desk.
Users are responsible for returning all materials borrowed with their library card, paying fines for overdue items, and paying for the replacement or repair of lost or damaged materials. Notify the library of any change in name, address, phone number, email address, etc. Do not allow others to use your library card, as library privileges are not transferable. Please report lost or stolen cards as soon as possible. Replacement cards are .50.
You are required to present your library card to check out library materials. In the event that you do not have your library card, you must present your driver’s license. All materials check out for a period of two weeks, and may be renewed unless they are on reserve or otherwise noted. Note: Borrowing periods for items belonging to other PCLC libraries are determined by the lending library and will vary.
Materials may be returned to the Circulation Desk or to our outside book drop. The book drop remains open 24/7 for your convenience. You may also return items to any public library in Polk County. Hotspot devices must be returned to the location they were checked out. [Please return any defective or damaged items to the Circulation Desk.]
To keep a book for a longer checkout period, renew it prior to/on the date it is due. You can renew your items in person at the Circulation Desk, by phone, or online by accessing your library account. Note: A maximum of two renewals are allowed per title (Hotspots are allowed one renewal if not requested). Items that are on reserve may not be renewed.
You can request items that are currently checked out or are located at other PCLC libraries. Reserve items in person, by phone, or online using the “Request” feature in the library catalog. Please keep in mind that multiple users may have a request on the same item. Requests for books will be filled based on the date of request, on a first come, first served basis. The library will notify you via phone or email when requested items arrive and are ready to be picked up. Requests will be held at the Circulation Desk for seven days, and will be returned to the collection if they are not picked up.
Library materials should be returned or renewed by the due date listed on your checkout receipt. Fines will start accruing on all materials the first day they are overdue and are assessed at $.10/item per day. Maximum fines are $3 per item, $10 for four or more items. Hotspot devices have a $1.00 a day late fee if not returned on time. After 3 days the device will be turned off and the account will be charged $60.00 for the item. Note: Fines for items belonging to other PCLC libraries are determined by the lending library and will vary.
Fines can be paid in person at the Circulation Desk using cash, check or credit card. We accept Visa, Master Card, and Discover. Unpaid fines/fees may result in the suspension of borrowing privileges. To find out if you have any fines, you can visit the Circulation Desk, inquire by phone, or view your fines online using your library account.
Lost or Damaged Material
Lost or damaged items should be reported as soon as possible. Users will be responsible for the replacement cost of lost items. Damaged material is evaluated to determine the severity of damage, and whether it can be repaired or needs to be replaced. Please visit the Circulation Desk to inquire about fees for lost or damaged materials.
