ALBERT I. LODWICK PHOTO COLLECTION P700
The photographs in this series concern Howard Hughes' around the world flight in 1938 in a then record time of 3 days, 19 hours and 14 minutes. Lodwick served as Hughes' flight operations manager and was responsible for mapping the route, making contact with government officials and airport managers to ensure that Hughes would be allowed to land, and arranging for refueling and repairs as necessary. Lodwick apparently collected the photographs in this series to commemorate his role in the flight. The series consists
primarily of photos of Howard Hughes in various settings. Included are a
number of photos of Hughes and Lodwick together, photos of Hughes posing
with his flight crew, photos of Hughes in the cockpit of the Lockheed 14
Monoplane which carried him and his crew around the world, and photos of
Hughes being interviewed by the press. Perhaps the most interesting
photograph in the series is one depicting Hughes and Lodwick in the
White House with President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The occasion was the
presentation by Roosevelt to Hughes of the Harmon International Trophy
as the world's outstanding aviator for 1938. Also included are photos of the Lockheed 14 Monoplane, photos of the New York City ticker tape parade held in Hughes' honor and individual portrait style photos of the four members of Hughes flight crew, Harry Connor, Edward Lund, Richard Stoddard and Thomas Thurlow. The photographs are arranged alphabetically by name or subject.
