INTRODUCTION
|
Students in Lakeland, and all across Polk County, will be returning to the classroom in August, just as their parents and grandparents did before them. The names and locations of the schools have changed in some instances. Some students, however, such as those attending the Dixieland School, will be sitting in the same classrooms as their parents and grandparents did. The curriculum has changed fundamentally since the grandparents, and even the parents, of today's students attended. Schools in Polk County today are integrated, with all races and ethnic groups attending classes side by side. Such was not the case with the grandparents and, in some cases, even the parents of today's students.
What has not changed, however, is the ritual of the opening of schools every year. What has not changed are the classrooms, the activities, the football games, and the pomp and circumstance of graduation.
