CITY BEAUTIFICATION BOARD (RG111) 1970-1991

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
"The Memorial Tree Committee appointed by the Lakeland City Commission on July 17, 1961 met for the first time at City Hall preceding the Chamber of Commerce Beautification meeting on July 25 at 7:00 p.m. Committee members present were: Wendell Watson, City Commissioner; Joker Marchant, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Lakeland; Thomas B. Mack, Landscape Architect; Mrs. Charles C. Cook, President of the Garden Club of Lakeland, Inc.; Mrs. Peggy Powell (Brown), Member of the Garden Club of Lakeland, Inc. and garden column editor for the Lakeland Ledger; Mrs. C. Henry Lovejoy, Garden Club member and originator and essential promoter of the memorial tree project." This was taken from the first minutes recorded by Charlotte B. Cook. This committee later became the City Beautification Board.

The Board proposed one of the first landscape ordinances in Florida which governs city plantings and was adopted by the City Commission in 1974. In 1976 Lakeland was the first city in Florida to be designated a Green Survival City because the citizens of Lakeland had done outstanding work in preserving and improving the quality of the natural environment. The City Beautification Board supports the City Parks and Recreation Department by suggesting improvements to enhance the beauty of the landscaping.

These records were donated by Charlotte Cook, who served as secretary and chairman between 1961 and 1985 and by Professor Thomas Mack, who served on the Board from 1986 through 1991, and was Board Chairman for the 1991 year.
