SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
|
In 1967 the City of Lakeland decided that it needed a larger civic center than the one on Lake Mirror. The new civic center opened in November 1974 on property west of the city. It was the largest arena of its kind in Central Florida. The name was changed to The Lakeland Center in June 1994 when plans were made to double the size of the Sikes Exhibition hall and renovate the Youkey Theatre and Jenkins Arena.
The collection includes a feasibility study, site evaluation, architects' proposals, designs, transportation study, renovation plans, and ephemera. The catalogued reports are listed below. See the Subject Files for brochures, schedules and other ephemera.
Newspaper articles on the demolition of the Moorehead neighborhood, construction of the center, expansion and search for a hotel, as well as articles about musical, theater, and sports programs, are located in the Vertical File.
