FLORIDA SOUTHERN COLLEGE COLLECTION (RG4500), 1922-2006

Scope and Content Note
Florida Southern College moved to Lakeland in 1922. Dr. Ludd M. Spivey, President from 1925 to 1957, was responsible for getting Frank Lloyd Wright to design many of the buildings on campus. The College has an information center and walking tour describing these buildings.

The collection contains mostly ephemera: brochures, Festival of Fine Arts programs, and postcards. Photographs of the Florida Southern College campus can be found in the Dan Sanborn Photograph Collection, P720, and in the general Lakeland Photograph Collection, P100, grouped under People: Wright; Groups: Florida Southern College; and Buildings: Florida Southern College, and P100 Oversize Photographs: 1926 campus and 1991 Commencement. The collection also includes a phonograph record of the Bell Choir directed by Albert Ream with readings by Dr. Charles Laymon (in the record collection).

There are several published books in the collection about the college: Through Three Decades at Florida Southern College, and Of Fact and Fancy...at Florida Southern College by President Charles T. Thrift; Florida Southern College, The First 100 Years by Theodore Haggard, Vice President; Alumni Directories from 1981 - 1989; and Cantilevers, poetry anthology from 1989 - 2000. There are also books edited by Florida Southern faculty about Lake Hollingsworth and Postcards of Lakeland.

The materials were organized into three series. Series I, Subject Files, contains general files about the college and its history. Series II, Publications and Yearbooks, contains copies of various student and alumni publications. Series III, Frank Lloyd Wright, contains information about the buildings Wright designed for the campus.
