RECORDS OF THE CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS COUNCIL OF LAKELAND (RG5480), 1971-1989

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Creative and Performing Arts Council of Lakeland, (Mayor's Advisory Committee on the Arts), also known as CAPAC, was established by proclamation by Mayor Joe P. Ruthven on October 4, 1971. Its purpose was to foster, develop and promote the creative and performing arts in the City of Lakeland by encouraging the cooperation of civic, governmental and other organizations. The Mayor was responsible for appointing 21 members who represented the arts. On April 17, 1989, the Lakeland City Commission formally dissolved the Council.

During the 18 years the Council was active it published a calendar which coordinated and scheduled local events, conducted programs in the schools, sponsored a scholarship, supported the Bicentennial Committee, and organized an Artist in Residence Program.
