The Fonchen Lord Papers were donated to the Special Collections unit of the Lakeland Public Library by Lord in 1989. The materials were in excellent condition and in no particular order when they were received. Lord was a renowned artist and sculptor who lived in Lakeland from 1949 to her death in 1993. Her work is represented in the permanent collections of art museums throughout Florida and has appeared in exhibits throughout the United States.
The records contained herein represent only a very small percentage of what Lord must have generated in her long and productive career. The only original pieces in the collection are an oil on fiber board painting entitled "Oblivion," a pen and ink sketch entitled "Anxiety," and a series of fourteen (human) model sketches in acrylic done by Lord in Jackson, New Hampshire during the summer of 1975. There are also color photographs of a representative sample of her sculptures in the collection. Pictured above is a sculpture by Lord entitled Totem Drums.
The collection comprises 2 linear feet. After processing, the records were organized into three series as follows:
Series I, Subject Files;
Series II, Exhibitions;
Series III, Photographs.
Series I, Subject Files, 1965-1988, contains files documenting Lord's professional and personal lives and includes artist's statements, biographical sketches, resumes, certificates of award, correspondence, newspaper clippings, price lists for her work, and fourteen sketches in acrylic completed in 1975.
Series II, Exhibitions, 1964-1988, consists of records relating to art exhibitions in which Lord's work was displayed. Included are exhibition brochures and catalogs, correspondence, reviews, newspaper clippings, and lists of Lord's work being displayed.
Series III, Photographs, @1970's-1980's, consists of photographs of several of Lord's sculptures, as well as photographs of the artist herself.
