The records in this series document to a small degree the professional and personal lives of Fonchen Lord. Included are artist's statements, correspondence with gallery owners, museum directors and family members, biographical sketches, resumes, price lists for her work, newspaper clippings, an oil on fiber board painting entitled "Oblivion," a pen and ink sketch entitled "Anxiety," and a series of fourteen acrylic on paper sketches which she completed in a six week period in 1975.
The artist's statements, which were prepared for exhibitions of her work, detail Lord's evolving artistic philosophy. In one dated November, 1972, she explained her art evolving from the two dimensional canvas to the three dimensional sculpture in aluminum thusly: "Moving into the metal wall sculpture was a natural answer to solving the problems of receding folds and the stretches of canvas. Aluminum was chosen because of its beauty and lightness of weight."
Also of significant interest in this series are the only original examples of Lord's work in the collection. These are fourteen acrylic on paper sketches done in 1975 at the home of Jackson, New Hampshire artist, David Baker. Lord was one of ten artists invited to Baker's home once a week for six weeks to do quick drawings of posed models. In a letter accompanying the donation of the sketches, Lord described them as ". . .drawn with a full acrylic palette rather than a pencil." She described it as "a good experience to be forced to work fast."
The records in this series are arranged alphabetically by name, subject, or type of record and chronologically within folders.
