ALBERT I. LODWICK PAPERS (RG2700), 1911-1959

SERIES IV: HOWARD HUGHES, 1936-1941

Howard Hughes

The records in this series relate to Albert Lodwick's association with industrialist and aviation pioneer Howard Hughes, especially his involvement in Hughes' record setting around the world flight of 1938. Hughes and Lodwick had apparently become acquainted in the 1930's as a result of their mutual interest in the aviation industry. Lodwick also served as an executive in the Hughes Tool Company. In addition, Lodwick had nominated Hughes for two prestigious awards given annually to outstanding aviators. His letters in support of Hughes can be found in folders labeled "Collier Trophy" and "Harmon Trophy."

The bulk of the records in this series, however, are concerned with Hughes' around the world flight in 1938 in a then record time of 3 days, 19 hours and 14 minutes. Lodwick served as Hughes' flight operations manager and was responsible for mapping the route, making contact with government officials and airport managers to ensure that Hughes would be allowed to land, and arranging for refueling and repairs as necessary.

The records include a map showing the route Hughes followed, biographical sketches of Hughes, descriptions of his proposed flight, an instruction and flight manual prepared by Lodwick, a diagram of the Lockheed 14 Monoplane used by Hughes, correspondence, and press releases. HUghes and Lodwick (r) are pictured above after the flight.

The records in this series are arranged alphabetically by subject or type of record and chronologically within folders.
