RECORDS OF THE BARTOW ARMY AIR BASE (RG2755) 1940-2003
bartow aircraft

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
Originally planned as an operational training station for medium bombardment aircraft, Bartow Army Air Base was changed to a Fighter Replacement Training Station as of February 15, 1943. It provided facilities for a fighter group and two fighter squadrons, a base headquarters, air base squadron, aviation squadron, guard squadron and sub-depot. The base was ordered to deactivate on 25 October 1945. The deactivation was completed and the base closed by the end of the year.

The Air Force reactivated the base from 1951 to 1960 as a Primary Training School for Air Force Pilots. More than 8,000 men were graduated from the school including astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Ed White.

Materials in this collection comprise 3.75 linear feet and are organized into three series:
Series I: Base History, 1941-1945
Series II: Memorabilia, 1940-1996
Series III: Yearbooks, 1952-1961.
