SS LAKELAND VICTORY COLLECTION 1945-1949
victory

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection documents the launching of the SS Lakeland Victory at a California shipyard in July 1945. It includes photographs of the ship sliding down the ways at its launching, photographs of the people involved in the launching ceremony, a program for the ceremony which specifically states the ship was "named in tribute to the city of Lakeland, Florida," a copy of the invocation given by Chaplain James Beamer, and newspaper clippings documenting the ship's launching and later participation in a mission to remove American citizens from China.

The above photograph is the SS Lakeland Victory as it slides down the ways at a Richmond, California shipyard on July 18, 1945.

The materials were donated to the Special Collections unit of the Lakeland Public Library by Chaplain Beamer's daughter, Mary Crapanzano in 1998.
