| JULIA BERRY BENNETT CLUB (RG5501) 1887-2003 |
 |
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE |
The Julia Berry Bennett Club is dedicated to fostering interest and excellence in art, literature, and music. The Young Ladies Sorosis Club was founded in the fall of 1928 by Lucile Bennett Munn for the purpose of inspiring interest in art, literature and music. In 1948 the name was changed to the Julia Berry Bennett Sorosis in order to show their appreciation to their founder's mother and was federated with the Florida General Federation of Women's Clubs. Mrs. Munn deeded her home on 315 Beacon Road to the Club in 1963, and it was incorporated as the Julia Berry Bennett Club.
In 1982, the club started a scholarship for a music student at Florida Southern College, then included art and literature students in 1991. It also awards scholarships to elementary school students for the Summer Art program held at the Polk Museum of Art.
The collection consists of 3 framed, photographic portraits: one of Lucille Bennett Munn and two of her mother Julia Berry Bennett (pictured above); scrapbooks, minutes, history of the organization, and other items listed below.
