PILOT CLUB OF LAKELAND (RG5650) 1950-1990

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Pilot Club of Lakeland was chartered in 1950 as a civic and service club for business and professional women. It was affiliated with Pilot Club International, which was chartered in Macon, Georgia, in 1921. The first president was Mrs. Kate Carver.

The Pilot Club of Lakeland was involved in a number of civic activities. The club supported a facility for the mentally challenged, the Marion Lea Training School, located at Crystal Lake. It also supported dental health, driver improvement, and bicycle safety programs. It staged an annual fashion show and sponsored the Polk County Quarter Horse Show at Bryant Stadium in 1959 and 1960. The Pilot Club sponsored Lakeland High School's Anchor Club and supported United Nations Day each October, organized annual Christmas Seal Drives, and published an "Interpreter's Guide", which was a compiled list of Lakelanders who served as interpreters for foreign visitors. The club disbanded in the early 1990's.

Materials in this collection belonged to Blanche Work, now deceased, who was a past president of the club and for many years Supervisor of Elections for Polk County. She was the first woman elected Supervisor of Elections in the state of Florida. She was named the 1961-1962 "Woman of the Year" by Lakeland's Coordinating Council of women's organizations.

The materials are organized into Subject Files.
