Photo: Magnolia Building.

This collection contains materials that document the activities of the Lakeland Tourist Club, founded in 1922. It had an active membership during most of its history, reaching its peak in 1927 with 1,625 members. The city built a clubhouse on Orange St. in 1938. It was designed by well known architect W. B. Talley. The building was renamed "The Magnolia Building" during the early 1960's, noted in the 1964-65 yearbook. In 1992 the organization changed its name to the Lakeland Winter Club, perhaps to reflect the historical fact that it was active only between November and April. Membership and attendance declined throughout the 1990's. As a result, the remaining members voted to dissolve the organization in 1998.

The Special Collections book collection includes three bound volumes of yearbooks covering 1922-1949, 1923-1949, and 1950-1972. (SC367.4921). We also have the original blueprints of the building in our collection.

Materials in this collection are organized into three series as follows:

Series I: Subject Files
Series II: Yearbooks
Series III: Chat and Sew Club
