This collection consists of a photocopy of the diary of Edmund Burke Hardin. The copy was donated to the Special Collections unit of the Lakeland Public Library by Hardin's grandson, Benjamin W. Hardin of North Carolina. Benjamin W. Hardin retains the original diary.
Edmund Burke Hardin was a native of Kentucky and a physician who moved to Lakeland in 1918. After moving to Lakeland, he appears to have given up his medical career in favor of real estate and the citrus industry. By the mid-1920's he owned a substantial amount of land in Lakeland, some in groves, some in speculative real estate. Hardin was financially devastated by the failure of the Florida land boom in the late 1920's and the subsequent Great Depression. His observations about these financial ups and downs are all reported in his diary. Burke died in Lakeland in 1939.
