SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Lawrence Stanhope was born October 7, 1901 in Ohio, but grew up on a farm near Fresno, California. There he watched his grandmother grow more tomatoes than her neighbors did in less time using hydroponics and a tiered rack, which he patented in the 1950's as Stanhope's Sun Slope. This growing rack is the root of the Space Garden, which Stanhope said would fly at least eight miles high, headed west at exactly the same speed that the Earth rotates east, allowing for constant sun exposure. The amount of darkness then could be controlled mechanically. After failing 112 times, he finally got a patent in 1986. He died April 26, 2000 in Lakeland at the age of 98.
Materials in this collection, including the patents and descriptions of his inventions, were donated by Mr. Stanhope in his will and are organized in two series, Personal Papers and Space Garden.
