LAKELAND MAP COLLECTION
The map collection consists of a variey of different types of maps of Lakeland from its founding in 1884 to the present. Included are aerial maps, street maps, plat maps, topographic and geological maps, and Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps from 1889 to 1946.

The Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps are particularly useful because they include symbols showing structures at specific street addresses in the city. The symbols are color coded to indicate the material used in the construction of the building (wood, brick, stone, etc.) The maps also indicate whether a particular building has been constructed from fire proof materials
