The Section is divided into several distinct units, including a drug enforcement group, a street crimes unit, special task forces, and criminal intelligence.
The Drug Enforcement Group consists of undercover officers who investigate complaints of vice and drug activity.
The Street Crimes Unit actively combats street level drug activity that occurs in open drug markets in the city. SCU is also a tactical team that helps with high risk drug warrant operations.
HIDTA is the "High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area" task force for central Florida and Polk County. Coordinated by the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Lakeland PD assigns detectives to HIDTA to assist in the overall drug enforcement activities throughout Polk County.
Federal Task Forces are also supplemented by personnel from SIS. Detectives assigned to federal task forces assist in referring local cases to the U. S. Attorney's Office for enhanced federal prosecution as well as bringing much needed federal investigative resources to help with some cases.
The Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) conducts background investigations into organized criminal activity and assists drug enforcement detectives in identifying suspects involved in major drug operations.
