DO THE RIGHT THING AWARD PROGRAM
Honoring Students for Good Deeds
 The "Do The Right Thing" award program honors children in our community, grades K - 12, who distinguish themselves through their accomplishments, attitude, or outstanding efforts. In doing so they make themselves a positive role model for their peers.
The DTRT program is a way to recognize good deeds and reinforce exemplary behavior. The residents of Lakeland can see the many "good things" the young people of our community are doing, and that "good kids" are newsworthy, too. This program allows us to thank our children for "Doing the Right Thing."
Students have been nominated for:
Keeping their school safe
Being selfless by volunteering their time to charitable organizations
Helping someone in need
Improvement in school grades and behavior
Overcoming personal challenges
Helping police solve a crime
School staff members and School Resource Officers typically nominate students whose positive actions come to their attention, but anyone can nominate a child. Nomination forms are available here, and once completed are sent to:

A volunteer committee reviews the student nominations and selects finalists on a bi-monthly basis. The students are then honored at an awards ceremony at the Lakeland Police Department where they are recognized for their actions and presented with certicates, a medallion, a t-shirt, and a small prize package.
An overall winner is selected from the finalists and receives a savings bond from Citrus and Chemical Bank, one of the program's major sponsors. All of the bi-monthly winners and their families are invited to attend an annual banquet to again recognize them for their efforts. An overall winner for the year is also announced.

The program receives financial support from the Lakeland business community, either in monetary contributions or prize donations. The DTRT current major sponsors include Publix Supermarket Charities, Kiwianis Club of North Lakeland, Fletcher Printing, and the LPD Law Enforcement Trust Fund.
Our media sponsors include WFLA Newschannel 8 and The Ledger who spotlight the children with photos and stories of their good deeds. This public recognition serves as a positive reinforcment and helps make the children feel special.
