The Lakeland Police PAL Chapter was awarded a $25,000 reimbursement grant from CareerSource Polk for the upcoming PAL Youth Leadership Summer Camp. The program works with at risk teens to promote positive attitudes and help them develop the skills needed to go out into the world. This is a great program and a good example of one way the Lakeland Police Department is working to keep children active during the summer.
PAL will provide summer camp for 40 at-risk teens ages 14 – 19 years old, 20 boys & 20 girls. This is an outstanding opportunity to get children off the street during summer months and non-school hours where latch key kids often find themselves participating in unstructured and unsupervised activities that lead to crime.
During the summer program, the teens will go on field trips, to include visiting state and local colleges, as well as an out of town trip to Atlanta, Georgia. The trip to Georgia will include visits to Georgia Tech, Morehouse College, Spellman College, Clark Atlanta College, CNN Center, World of Coca Cola, Georgia Dome, Fox Theatre, Jimmy Carter Library, Stone Mountain, Glady’s Knight Chicken and waffles and the underground mall. The teens will also participate in trainings to include; workforce readiness, dress for success, teenage pregnancy prevention, Culinary Arts, Life skills training, financial management, SAT/ ACT preparation, gang awareness, leadership training, cyber space bullying, social media, etiquette training. And, that’s not all; the youth will perform community service projects while attending the camp.
Pastor Boss from Greater Faith Christian Center, 2035 W. Parker Street, has partnered with PAL to provide the location for the 2014 Youth Leadership Camp.
This camp is normally used as a recruitment tool to get teens to join the year around Youth Leadership program offered by the PAL program. The main focus is to get our community children more exposure so they can see that there are greater opportunities in our country to live the American dream!
For those interested in the PAL Youth Leadership Summer Camp, registration will begin Monday May 5, 2014 at Simpson Park Community Center, 1725 Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, from 12:00noon – 8:00pm.
