On October 17, 2013 at 10:40 a.m., Lakeland Highlands Middle School, 740 Lake Miriam Drive, received several messages over a coach’s walkie-talkie in which someone was impersonating school officials. The messages ordered certain individuals to the office. One message in particular stated, “The explosives are in place and I’m feeling crazy”.
The school was evacuated and Lakeland Police Officers along with school officials conducted a search of the school for any suspicious packages. The school was closed until approximately 12:38 p.m. at which time students were allowed back inside. The School Resource Officer and school administrators received information from several students on who a possible suspect was. Lakeland Highlands Middle School student, Timothy Brian Keyes, 14 years old, was interviewed and admitted to making the threats using a walkie-talkie. He was able to get on the same channels that are used by the schools coaches. The walkie-talkie was also located in Keyes backpack.
Timothy Keyes was taken into custody and charged with Making a Bomb Threat, Felony 2 degree. He was later transported to the Juvenile Detention Center.
