The Lakeland Police Department Communications Center Invites Public Comment on Accreditation Efforts
The Lakeland Police Department Communications Center is scheduled for an onsite assessment as part of a program to achieve accreditation by verifying it meets industry standards.
Administered by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement (CALEA), the accreditation program requires agencies to comply with state-of-the-art standards in seven areas inherent to public safety communications industry: (1) Organization, (2) Direction and Supervision, (3) Human Resources, (4) Recruitment, Selection and Promotion, (5) Training, (6) Operations and (7) Critical incidents, Special Operations and Homeland Security.
As part of the onsite assessment, communications employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments during a telephone session, Tuesday, July 15, 2014, from 2:00 p.m., to 4:00 p.m. Members of the community are encouraged to phone-in and offer comments to the Assessment Team. Telephone comments will be limited to 10-minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA Public Safety Communications standards. Jo-Anne began her career in public safety in 1977 as a dispatcher and retired from Onondaga County Department of Emergency Communications Syracuse, NY as the Deputy Commissioner in March of 2010. She served as her departments CALEA Accreditation Manager for 8 years and has been a CALEA assessor since 1999. She also has served as the Chair of APCO's Institute ADCOMM, served on several workgroups to update APCO's Basic Telecommunicator, Fire Dispatcher and Supervisors course. She received APCO's Presidential Award for her work on the Fire Dispatcher course and received a Certificate of Appreciation from CALEA for her work on the 2nd Edition Standards for Communications. Currently she is an instructor with APCO teaching the APCO/CALEA Communications Accreditation Managers course. She has a BS and Master's from Jacksonville State University in Emergency Management. Currently Jo-Anne is employed as the Director of the Department of Emergency Communications in Alexandria, VA.

Kathy Strickland became a member of the Cobb County Emergency Communications Center in 1998. During that time she has worked in the center as a dispatcher and Training Officer. She was promoted to Public Safety Services Coordinator in 2005 and further serves as the Accreditation Manager. In addition of being a CALEA assessor and state of Georgia assessor, she is the Vice President for the Public Safety Communications Accreditation Support Network (PSCASN), a member of the Georgia Police Accreditation Coalition, and a member of the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO). Kathy currently holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree from Georgia College University.
