AVIATION UNIT

The LPD Aviation Unit is part of the Special Operations Section within the Uniform Patrol Division. The Aviation Unit was re-established in 1995 with the purchase of a military surplus Bell OH-58 Vietnam era helicopter. Currently, the Avaition Unit is on its second OH-58 helicopter and operates on a $160,000 annual budget, which is minimal compared to other agencies in the State. Our current helicopter was donated to us by Riverside County (CA) Sheriff's Office.

The Aviation currently has two pilots and a part-time pilot who serves as our Chief Pilot and Certified Flight Instructor with over 35 years experience in rotor craft. Additionally, two Reserve Officers serve as Tactical Flight Officers (TFO) as well. The TFO is responsible for operation of the thermal imaging equipment which is used during pursuits and in looking for subjects that are attempting to hide in fields and other hard to get to locations.

The helicopter has proven itself to be an essential tool, both in support of street officers, drug interdiction, and the search, location, and security of crime scenes. Airborne law enforcement is described as a force multiplier and is the equivalent of 10 to 15 units on the street due to it rapid response time and aerial platform. With commitment from Bell Helicopter and the City of Lakeland, the LPD Aviation Unit will continue to be a valuable asset to the citizens of Lakeland and the Lakeland Police Department.

Air One is currently housed at the Lakeland Linder Regional Airport and can be deployed anywhere in the city within minutes after takeoff.
