Selective Enforcement
The Traffic Enforcement Section at LPD consists of two teams with a total of 15 Officers and two Sergeants. Each team has Motorcycle Officers, Crash Investigators, and DUI Enforcment Officers. All of the Officers have been through advanced training in Traffic Homicide Investigation. Any of the officers that are THI's will investigate all fatality crashes that occur within the city. THI's are the case agents and work fatals from start to finish. Additionally, the Traffic Section is primarily responsible for all traffic enforcement in problem areas and crash investigation throughout the city.
The Selective Enforcement officer are six motor officers who have received over 80 hours of advanced training in riding the Police bikes. The motorcycle of choice is the Harley Davidson Road King. The motor officers are mostly responsible for speed enforcement and selective enforcement on residential streets and highways of Lakeland. They work closely with other Departments within the city on neighborhood projects in an effort to solve traffic problems. They also supplement the Crash Investigators during peak crash times. |

The DUI Enforcement consists of four highly trained officers in the realm of detection and apprehension of impaired drivers. Since 1998 when the DUI Enforcement Unit was created, LPD has taken a proactive stance on getting impaired drivers off the street. Last year alone, over 17,000 people were killed in the U.S. by alcohol or drug impaired drivers. It is estimated that alcohol and drug related DUI crashes costs citizens over $46 billion a year in everything from lost wages to health care costs.
Three of the four DUI Officer are Drug Recognition Experts. This is advanced training that goes into the area of drug impairment and driving. All four DUI Officers are Traffic Homicide Investigators and serve as nighttime Crash Investigators.
The DUI Unit is out seven days a week, 365 days a year and is determined to get as many impaired subjects as possible off the road. In Lakeland, if you are caught driving impaired, YOU WILL BE ARRESTED. So remember if you drink and drive, YOU LOSE. |

Crash Investigations For information on Florida DOT or Crash stats go to myflorida.com.
The Crash Investigation officers are five officers who work primarily during the days and respond to crashes. Their primary focus is working and investigating crashes ranging from minor fender benders to fatals. Additionally, several of the Crash Investigators also have advanced skills in crash reconstruction and computerized collision diagraming to compliment other advanced training. These officers also supplement the motor officers when it comes to traffic enforcement.
Many of our traffic officers work high complaint and high crash areas with the goal of increasing safety and reducing crashes.
The Traffic Unit also participates with all county agencies involved in the Community Traffic Safety Team and is a part of countywide checkpoints throughout the year. |
