Drug Enforcement

The Narcotics unit maintains the capability to conduct operations at all levels of the illegal narcotics trade. Traditionally known for conducting covert operations, officers of the unit have expanded the area of operations to include drug education programs for children, religious and citizen groups.

Members of this unit are responsible for enforcement of street level narcotics activity, along with enforcement activities regarding drug diversion, forged prescriptions, illegal distribution of pharmaceutical medications, and obtaining controlled substances by fraud. Numerous operations have been undertaken that address the illegal distribution of prescriptions/prescription medications.

Detectives assigned to the Narcotics unit are responsible for investigating narcotics offenses by developing confidential sources and conducting undercover investigations. Members in this assignment are highly motivated and work hard to address issues and build cases based on information received from a variety of sources including patrol officers, community members, confidential informants, and other law enforcement agencies. Investigations can range from arresting street level dealers and shutting down a nuisance property, to long term investigations that dismantle drug trafficking organizations.

The Lakeland Police Department has great working relationships with several local, county, state and federal agencies involved in the enforcement of drug laws. Members of the unit work hand in hand with officers from a variety of other agencies in investigating cases and working operations to address criminal activity.
