Lakeland PD Citizens Police Academy
The Department believes it is essential to have Citizen-Police interaction and cooperation. One effective way to achieve this goal is through education.
The Citizens Police Academy (CPA) is designed for selected community-oriented citizens. The CPA includes detailed information on police topics such as uniformed patrol, special investigations (i.e., vice and narcotics), criminal investigations, SWAT, and many other areas of interest. Also included in the curriculum is a tour of the police station, communications center, as well as the opportunity to ride with a patrol officer. A firearms familiarization course is also covered one Saturday.
Although graduates of the CPA are not prepared for street duties, they do have a better understanding of the Lakeland Police Department and a greater awareness and appreciation of the challenges and decisions faced by Lakeland police officers each day.
Community involvement is the most powerful force any law enforcement agency has on the fight against crime. Through the CPA, citizens are getting involved in making Lakeland a better, safer place to live.
One recent graduate wrote in her course evaluation:
"What I enjoyed the most was watching each week as different ones brought their specific jobs to life as they spoke about what they do for the Department. I could see the pride and excitement that they get from being a police officer and serving this community."
