"Dispatchers Save Seconds; Seconds Save Lives"
Communications Dispatcher Police and Fire The Communications Dispatcher dispatches police and fire services. A police dispatcher must learn Police Radio, the Computer Aided Dispatch System (CAD) and over 200 Signals and Codes that serve as our primary language to communicate. A police dispatcher can be responsible for 25 to 45 officers at one time depending on the time of day and day of the week. The dispatcher must simultaneously update the status of each officer in the CAD system while managing radio traffic and pending calls for service. These dedicated members are the "nerve center" of operations for the department as every call for help reaches a communications specialist first. |

"9-1-1 Emergency; Where do you need help?"
Communications Call-Taker Call-Takers are required to answer emergency (911) and non-emergency calls in a calm and supportive voice while attempting to obtain as much essential information as possible. Police Officers and Fire Fighters responding to an emergency call rely on detailed information provided by a Call-Taker. The Call-Taker enters the information into the computer aided dispatch system as the information is received while verifying the location of the caller. The call is automatically sent to the computer screen of the appropriate police or fire dispatcher. The information is continuously updated as additional information is received or the call is terminated. The Lakeland Police Department Communications Section is Commanded by Lt. Joe Henson and staffed with 36 Emergency Communications Specialists and four ECS Supervisors. The ECS personnel are divided between four squads and work 12 hour shifts to cover a 24 hour operation. If you have any questions or concerns you can email Lt. Joe Henson.
