Closing Prado Place

Effective Wednesday, May 2, 2012, access to Prado Place will be permanently closed.  This will be the permanent configuration for the Edgewood Drive Extension road project.  Area residents will need to utilize either Windsor Street or Palencia Place to access their residences or area businesses.  Appropriate signage will be posted.  The road construction is on schedule and the anticipated completion date is November 2012.  At that time, both east and west travel lanes will be open from South Florida Avenue to Harden Boulevard.

ASCE 2012 Project of the Year

Project Update

Edgewood Drive Extension – Phase II

The Edgewood Drive Extension project will extend Edgewood Drive from South Florida Avenue to Harden Boulevard.  This project consists of a new two-lane roadway, sidewalk, drainage improvements, roadway lighting and signalization (at South Lincoln Avenue and Harden Boulevard). 

The project is funded by Gas Tax and Impact Fee revenues.  Polk County has contributed $4 million to this project and the City has also received federal funding in the amount of $4 million.

On December 5, 2011, the Lakeland City Commission approved staff’s recommendation to award the Edgewood Drive Extension construction contract to QGS Development, Inc.  The bid amount is $2,704,000.00.  The contract requires the work to be completed in 300 calendar days.  The current project schedule is as follows:

December 5, 2011    Award of road construction contract

December 12, 2011  Pre-Construction Open House held for citizens

January 3, 2012        City’s contractor, QGS Development, Inc. mobilized road construction crews

November 2012        Project completion date

What happens next?  Relocation of electric and telephone facilities are on-going.  Over the next few months, the City’s contractor, QGS Development, Inc., will be concentrating their work efforts in the alley between Eden Parkway and S. Florida Avenue.  Activities will include storm water pipe installation, alley, roadway and sidewalk construction.

Paving of the new Edgewood Drive Extension (from Harden Boulevard to South Lincoln Avenue) began on March 19, 2012.  Installation of lighting and landscaping conduit work will follow in this area.

The City of Lakeland, Public Works Department, together with the firms of Kimmins Contracting, Tierra, Hayward Baker and Atkins North America, received the prestigious American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 2012 Project of the Year award for the East-West Connector (Ditch Relocation/Slime Remediation) project.  This was the first phase of the Edgewood Drive Extension project that was completed in 2011.

Project Facts

The Edgewood Drive Extension project will extend Edgewood Drive from S. Florida Avenue to Harden Boulevard. A traffic signal is proposed at S. Lincoln Avenue. The new traffic signal installed at Harden Boulevard is fully operational. The road construction plans are nearing completion and right of way acquisition is complete.  This project is funded by Gas Tax and Impact Fee revenues.  Polk County has contributed $4 million to this project and the City has also received federal funding in the amount of $4 million.
