Mission
The Construction and Maintenance Division consists of a diverse team of construction and maintenance personnel dedicated to providing timely customer service and delivering superior municipal services. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for Lakeland residents and visitors by providing responsive, cost-effective and environmentally sound infrastructure management, and related Public Works services. The division strives to respond to citizen concerns in a timely fashion, pinpoint areas of operation that need improvement, and coordinate with other departments and divisions to improve the appearance of the City and reduce duplication of efforts.

The division is responsible for street, right-of-way and drainage system construction and continuing maintenance projects within the 71.6 square miles of land area of its corporate limits. Employees provide valuable support to other City departments as well as county and state agencies.

Street Paving
The Maintenance Section is responsible for maintaining 741 lane miles of paved City streets and alleys, which includes 11.2 centerline miles of park, airport and cemetery roads; more than 250 miles of sidewalks; and 445 lane miles of curbs. Four Area Maintenance Crews, a Downtown Crew, a Street Sweeping Crew, a Concrete Repair Crew, a Roadway Marking Crew and two Asphalt Repair Crews accomplish this mission.

This Section also is responsible for maintaining a City-wide storm drainage system that includes approximately 232 miles of underground storm sewer pipe and underdrains, and more than 60 miles of ditches. Included within this system are approximately 8,000 storm inlets, 170 detention/ retention ponds, 419 outfall structures and 15 City-maintained lakes. We have 7 full-time employees to keep these drainage facilities attractive and in good working order. Protecting the systems that provide the foundation for the beauty of Lakeland is of primary importance to these employees.
