Maintenance around the City!

 Clearing around Signs |
Right-of-way maintenance isnt just for appearance! The Public Works Construction and Maintenance Division works year round to keep Lakeland beautiful, safe, and prepared for any storm events that might occur. The employees are on constant lookout for conditions that could be hazardous in the event of strong storms. The five area crews in C & M have divided the City of Lakeland into four quadrants and the downtown area. The four quadrants are divided into four sections. Each two-man crew takes pride in keeping their section looking the best it can. The area crews are in each section for a week, and move around the City as a group from the northeast, to the southeast, to the southwest, to the northwest. The crew dedicated to the downtown area works keeping that 38 acres in pristine condition, and there is one crew dedicated to concrete repair. |

 Clearing along Sidewalks |
The crews are responsible for minor tree trimming; trimming shrubs that are blocking sidewalks and traffic signs; mowing and spraying right-of-way; small sidewalk repair jobs such as tripping hazards; sidewalk and inlet cleaning; and alley cleaning; and they identify areas that need the attention of the street maintenance and pavement marking crews. |
 Streetscape Repair |
During fiscal year 07-08 the downtown crew cleaned and sprayed 6,582,618 square feet of streetscape, repaired 5,192 square feet of streetscape and tree boxes, and cleaned alleys and sidewalks in the downtown core area. They report to work at 3 a.m. two days a week so they can assist the street sweepers in cleaning downtown before the merchants open their shops. |
 Clearing Storm Drains |
The other area crews combined to clean and trim limbs in nearly 23,980 square yards of alleys; clean 8,500 inlets; trim, clean and 213,308 linear feet of right of way; and clean 144,057 linear feet of sidewalks. The concrete crew repaired or replaced 13,952 linear feet of broken sidewalk to eliminate tripping hazards. |
