Drainage
The Construction and Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining all the drainage facilities in the Lakeland city limits. These facilities include 1.2 million linear feet of storm sewer and approximately 8,000 storm sewer inlets; more than 132,000 square yards of ditches and canals; 53 detention/retention ponds, 10 city maintained lakes; and 419 outfall structures.
The drainage crew consists of seven full-time employees. In fiscal year 2009, they cleaned 28,700 linear feet of storm pipe and 6,668 inlets. They applied herbicide and mowed 2,605,263 square yards of ditches, retention ponds and lake shorelines.
A flusher truck operates city-wide to clean storm pipes and to vacuum out clogged inlets. Area crews notify the truck operator when they find inlets they are unable to clean.

| Menzi all-terrain excavator |
The ditches and retention ponds are mowed and maintained by an Aebi all-terrain mower and a Menzi all-terrain excavator. The Menzi is able to mow steep ditch embankments and reestablish the grade on ditches and shorelines. This equipment also is called to duty when other crews need assistance with excavation in areas that other pieces of equipment cannot reach.
The diligence of these City employees is essential in keeping Lakeland drainage systems ready to handle the water left behind by major storm events, including hurricanes.
