Aquatic Plant Management

Vegetation is important for a healthly, productive ecosystem.

Aquatic plants are often grouped into categories of small and large. Typically, lakes are dominated by
either small, microscopic plants (algae) or large, vascular plants (macrophytes). Lakes dominated by algae usually have green water, while lakes dominated by macrophytes have clear or tea-stained water. Submerged macrophytes compete with algae for available nutrients in the water. If abundant, they can limit the amount of algae in the water – increasing water clarity.

Controlled Burning ('Perscribed Fires') - Before our urban land development, natural fires helped maintain our 'Florida' native habitats. We use the method of perscribed fires to restore and maintain our natural habitats, cycle nutrients, and reduce wildfire disasters.

Our Background
At the time our Lakes and Stormwater program started in 1987, aquatic plant management/control was listed as one of our goals. Most of our lakes' surfaces and shorelines were partially or totally covered with exotic and nuisance vegetation. Visibility and accessibility into our lakes were poor.

Invasive Vegetation Removal
Our Plant Removal Activities - Learn about invasive plants and the methods that can be utilized to control
their spread within our City's water resources.

Native Vegetation Plantings
What is Native Vegetation - Learn about the different species, our current 'native' revegetation projects, and why everyone should plant 'native'.

Lakeside Information Displays - Find out where our 'aquatic plants' displays are located!
