Lake Hollingsworth Westside Regional
Stormwater Treatment Project

March 2009 Update
The Lake Hollingsworth Westside Regional Stormwater Treatment Project is an effort co-funded by the City of Lakeland and the Southwest Florida Water Management District’s Peace River Basin Board. As a continuation of efforts to improve the quality of Lake Hollingsworth since the lake was dredged in 2001, this project is designed to remove dirt, sand, leaves, grass clippings, trash, and other debris washed toward the lake with stormwater.

Currently, a 217-acre area from South Florida Ave. to the West, Beacon Rd. to the South and Belmar St. to the North drains into Lake Hollingsworth. Ten baffle boxes will be installed to collect drainage from thirteen pipes currently discharging directly to the lake. Anything that goes into the storm drains in this area ends up in the lake. This project will treat the stormwater by preventing this material from getting to the lake. Baffle boxes will be installed underground to screen out floating debris and allow sediments to sink and collect in the box. The box will be vacuumed out on a monthly routine.

The most recent project design will use City owned property. The majority of the baffle boxes will be installed to the East of the walking path between the path and the lake. These locations will allow the baffle boxes to be installed in-line with the upstream pipes. Maintenance driveways will be installed using an engineered turf paving system that will allow the grass to withstand the monthly maintenance truck traffic.

• Notice to Proceed Issued
• Construction to Start on or about 4/1/09

Construction will start on or about April 1, 2009 and be completed within 6 months. Each Baffle Box will be fully installed before proceeding to the next. This process is to be followed in order to limit the traffic and recreation disruption caused by the construction. The goal of all involved is to maintain recreational and traffic use of the area. Bike and pedestrian use is to be maintained and temporary bypass paths built if needed. The convenience and safety of the citizens and visitors are the most important priorities during this construction activity.

The first area of activity will be Site #10 located at the end of Palmola Street at Lake Hollingsworth Drive. Signs will be posted at the ends of Palmola Street and Beacon Road to identify the entire project site and provide information about the project to area visitors. The site plans, linked below, display the placement of the other 9 Baffle Box locations.

The last Baffle Box will be installed at Beacon Road and Lake Hollingsworth Drive. The northern triangular median will be removed and a water line relocated to allow for installation of the Baffle Box. The median will then be replaced and landscaping installed by the Parks and Recreation Department.

During the installation at Beacon Road, southbound Lake Hollingsworth Drive traffic will not be allowed to turn right on to westbound Beacon Road. Other traffic advisories will be made as they develop.

Please call Doug Gleckler at 863-834-8439 if you have further questions regarding this project.
