Project Spotlight

  • SR 33 (Lakeland Hills Blvd.) from Parkview Place to North of Granada Street | FDOT

    Current Construction Phase:

With the new water, sewer, and drainage systems installed and the new northbound lanes prepared, crews will begin connecting the new utilities and removing the old water and sewer lines on the west side of the roadway.

To safely complete this work, traffic will be shifted onto the new lanes on the east side of the roadway- first from north of E. Bella Vista Street to Griffin Road, starting July 9, and next from Parkview Place to E. Bella Vista Street in late July/early August 2026. Both northbound and southbound traffic will be traveling on the new lanes!

  • Western Trunk Gravity Sewer Line

    Background:

The City of Lakeland Water Utilities has launched Phase One of a critical infrastructure project to upgrade the Western Trunk Gravity Sewer Line. This major line, installed in the 1980s, carries approximately 3.5 million gallons of wastewater per day to the Southwest Pump Station through a 36-inch reinforced concrete pipe. Over time, structural lining and past repairs have reduced the pipe’s diameter, limiting capacity and hindering system performance and future expansion.

Phase One construction began in the Forrest Park and Lotus Avenue area, with traffic control measures currently in place.

    Next Steps:

Work will continue north along Lotus Avenue and is scheduled to cross Ariana Street during the week of July 17th, 2025. This intersection will be closed for approximately three weeks, with clearly marked detours provided around the construction zone.

    Why This Upgrade is Necessary

    • Increased Capacity: Supports community growth and eliminates system bottlenecks.
    • Public Safety: Realigns sewer lines away from residential areas in the Oakhill, Colonial, and Citrus Center Colony Mobile Home Parks.
    • Harden Boulevard Improvements: 1,400 linear feet of pipe will be rerouted from beneath Harden Blvd for better accessibility and safety.
    • Maintenance Access: New infrastructure will improve inspection, maintenance, and emergency response efficiency.

  • Easton Drive Paving

LAKELAND, FL (October 2, 2025) | Easton Drive, from Fairmount Avenue to Buckingham Avenue, will be repaved with asphalt due to safety issues caused by repeated washouts of the existing brick street during heavy rainfall. These washouts have occurred multiple times, undermining the brick foundation and creating hazardous conditions for motorists.

Approximately six years ago, Easton Drive underwent a brick street restoration project, where the asphalt surface was removed to reveal and restore the original brick roadway. Despite the City’s efforts to maintain the brick street, severe rain events have repeatedly caused significant deterioration beneath the bricks, making it impractical to retain the current surface.

To prepare for the asphalt repaving, City crews will install concrete ribbon tie-ins at the intersecting streets within the project limits. These tie-ins will provide a smooth transition between the remaining brick underlayment and the new asphalt surface.

A start date for the project has not been set at this time, pending purchase order approvals for the start of the new FY26 fiscal year. Once purchase orders are in place, City crews will install concrete ribbons and asphalt resurfacing will be scheduled with the contractor. An update will be sent out once the project start date has been determined.

Motorists and pedestrians can expect delays and should find alternate routes. This project should take four (4) months to complete.
