Economic Development

The Economic Development Division understands the importance of nurturing relationships with the business community. This is accomplished by offering assistance with the development process, helping business owners tap into available resources, and providing avenues for businesses to achieve success. Whether you are a startup or a long-established business, the Business Development Office is ready to meet with you to extend our welcome and to discuss any issues or questions you may have about Lakeland.

Our division seeks to:

  • Market Lakeland’s  services to external and internal customers
  • Expand and diversify Lakeland’s economy

Development Review Process

A graphic for the DRT (conceptual review) process: "Step 1:Submit an application for Conceptual Review (DRT) via iMS. $230 can be paid online via iMS or in office with a check. Application and submittal process can be found on the City Website: lakelandgov.net. Step 2- After applying online you will receive an invitation email from ProjectDox, proceed to follow instructions. You will upload drawings into the drawings folder and upload the application and any other documents into the documents folder. Step 3: Receive comments regarding your project and an agenda for your scheduled DRT meeting. Formulate a plan addressing comments and creating questions for reviewers. Step 4- Attend your scheduled DRT meeting to discuss your project with the DRT reviewers. After the meeting you will receive updated comments for your project including details regarding whether Site Plan Review is required. Step 5- Apply for Site Plan review (if required) online via iMS. Follow same procedure as Concept Review. Minor (up to 1 acre)- $270.00. Major (up to 5 acres) $500.00 + $25/acre over 5 acres. Step 6- Apply for a building permit online via eTrakIt. A building permit can be applied for anytime during the DRT process, however the permit will only be approved once the Site Plan has been approved (if necessary). More info can be found on the City Website. Step 7 Early Start, site alteration, & site work permits. An Early start permit can be applied for to begin work while the Building Permit and Site Plan Review are under review. A site alteration permit can be applied for to begin site work if the site plan has gone through one review cycle and the building permit is under review. A site work permit can be issued if the site plan has been approved but the building is under review.
